Renting a Property - Australia
Once you are settled in an Australian city it is cheaper to rent a house or flat than to stay in a hotel or hostel. The best way to find accommodation is to buy a copy of the local paper on a Saturday morning. Real estate agencies will also publish lists of rental properties. Alternatively, visit www.realestate.com.au or doman.com.au. Due to the strong demand for properties you must move quickly so be prepared with a deposit and references.
To enter a lease, most real estate agents require reference letters from your employer, bank and if available, a previous landlord/lady. The Global Opportunities team at Michael Page can supply an employment reference for you should you need one before you start working in Australia. Most real estate agencies will require a down-payment of at least two months rent, one which will be kept as a bond and is refundable when you move out.
While you are looking for longer term accommodation, you may want to stay in accommodation for travellers. The main Australian cities have numerous hostels. For further information visit www.yha.com.au
