Where else but Queensland

Employment growth across professional occupation groups in Queensland continues to grow at a faster rate than the national average, according to a recent survey by global specialist recruitment firm Michael Page International.

The online survey, completed by 120 hiring managers in Queensland, shows that 67 per cent of companies expect to increase their permanent staff numbers over the next 12 months, placing Queensland well above the national hiring average of 56 per cent. Only 6 per cent of companies anticipate a decrease and 27 per cent predict staff numbers will remain the same.

An increasing number of multinationals and blue-chip organisations are selecting Queensland as the location of choice for their ongoing expansion due to cost competitiveness, population growth and the State’s enviable lifestyle, including the likes of IBM, Boeing, Virgin Blue, Oracle, Flight Centre and Mincom.

According to Robert Lyster, Associate Director for Michael Page in Queensland, the positive employment outlook is not limited to the booming mining and construction sectors.

“Even though the mining and resources boom coupled with significant infrastructure investment are fuelling jobs growth in Queensland, we are seeing high levels of recruitment activity across the board. Companies are investing in business services functions ranging from finance and technology to sales and marketing,” he said.

“Employers are optimistic about the State’s future growth and the employment outlook is positive, which we are responding to as a business. My recruitment team in Brisbane has more than doubled in size over the past year and we’ve had to move offices recently to accommodate the growth,” he said.

The research also highlighted that, while salaries in the Sunshine State may have lagged behind other states in the past, professionals can now command comparative salaries nationally.

“We have recruited several executive positions at the $250,000+ salary level in recent months across various industries, which is evidence of the attractive salaries and career opportunities on offer in Queensland,” he said.
