Practical advice on where and how to search for your dream job…

Thinking laterally about how and where you search for work will increase your chances of successfully finding a rewarding and fulfilling job. In addition to registering with Michael Page International, you should use the following job search channels depending on the current stage of your career.

Newspapers
Familiarise yourself with the national newspapers that cater specifically for your profession and find out on which days vacancies are advertised.

Trade magazines / professional journals
If you are a member of a professional body you should read their magazines and e-newsletter to keep yourself updated with industry news and current job vacancies.

The Internet
Jump online and search job boards like SEEK, MyCareer and CareerOne. These sites have search engines that enable you to specify criteria such as discipline, job type, salary, location. Some also provide user logins that will save your details and email any relevant jobs to you as they come in.

Direct company approaches
If approached correctly, direct speculative applications can sometimes uncover vacancies in organisations where recruitment is done in-house rather than through an agency. Be sure to find the relevant recruitment contact within the organisation and address your letter or email application to them.

Ensure your covering letter or email clearly states the type of job you are interested in and ensure it is something you are realistically suitable for.
