On Thursday the 19th August 2010, Michael Page held a CIO Focus Group with renowned guest speaker Linda Price, Group Vice President of Executive Programs of Gartner, Asia Pacific. Linda has an impressive background spanning 20 years of experience across multiple industries, with a great track record of managing and motivating large teams, engendering an ethic of energy and drive.

Linda’s presentation, based on her past experiences and knowledge, was focused on building a high performing IT organisation through its people. Specifically talent management, retention of staff and engaging new talent in this current climate were highlighted and are applicable across all industries and sectors.

The current status of the employment market and its growing strength mean that there is a possibility over 70% of organisations can expect to suffer from skill shortages. Employees who have been unhappy in their roles are now taking the initiative to see what growth opportunities exist within other companies. Linda suggests that part of the solution to this is putting greater focus on current employee engagement and developing from within.

The benefits of growing talent internally can be great, the key is to learn how to engage and retain top talent in an increasingly competitive market. The top ways to do this include; employment stability, reward programs, comprehensive training and development, work life balance, empowerment and learning how to appeal to generational differences between employees.

One of the most crucial points was the importance of clear and effective communication with all levels of employees. Recognising that different generations respond in different ways to communication and ensuring these methods of delivery appeal to all employees regardless of age. This is a key factor in maintaining high levels of productivity, growth and retention in this economic climate.
