The role is based in Brisbane and requires a strong technical/design background in the heavy/mining industry alongside with solid leadership skills.

Our client is a key player in the Mining Equipment industry with a worldwide presence. As global leader, they are currently seeking a Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the delivery of high-quality engineering design, technical solutions and advanced engineering support. The role will have direct reports, being responsible for its revision control and peer reviews.

Job Description

The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer will have the following 3 clusters of responsibility:

Product Category Leadership

  • Lead the direction and creation of new or revised product designs for the designated product category aligned with the product strategy, or in response to existing product issues.
  • Conduct reviews of other engineers designs to ensure that they are completed to a high standard and in accordance with industry standards.
  • Conduct high quality risk assessments/FMEAs to assess the risks associated with proposed designs and implement practicable controls.
  • Ensure that all technical outcomes and solutions are delivered such that a marketable sale price delivers a high margin.
  • Provide project updates and timeline estimates to relevant stakeholders from concept to completion.



Product Design and Support

  • Conduct root cause investigations into products related issues and make recommendations on potential resolutions.
  • Attend client or supplier sites to assess and/or support the products range throughout its life cycle, increasing product knowledge.
  • Prototype, trial or simulate proposed product designs to verify that they achieve the requirements defined in the project scope.
  • Prepare technical documentation.



Team Management

  • Lead and manage direct reports to deliver best in class technical outcomes for the product category.
  • Contribute towards building and maintaining a healthy team culture and developing direct reports capabilities and skills.
  • Share knowledge and insights with peers and colleagues to increase the collective knowledge of the engineering team.

The Successful Applicant

A successful Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer meets with the following requirements:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Solid previous experience as a Mech. Design Engineer gained in large mining equipment/heady industry.
  • Strong technical knowledge of mechanical design and engineering principles.
  • Proficiency in CAD software and data management systems involving revision control and peer reviews.
  • Experience in FEA.
  • Excellent leadership and mentoring skills.
