Market Update

The key focus for IT departments across various industry sectors this year is innovation, which is creating a positive employment market for the IT industry across Australia.  IT companies are restructuring their teams to increase efficiencies as they develop new business functions and made advances in software and hardware.

There is a high demand for Business Analysts, as well as IT professionals with service management skills and experience with agile software development,  as technology teams are looking to hire permanent staff. Over the next 12 months, advances in big data, mobility and cloud data will drive high demand for Program Managers and Architects. The preference towards hiring technology professionals on a temporary basis continues to grow due to fixed project budgets.

ICT are primarily concentrating on improving processes and experiences for mobile and wireless devices to enhance the customer experience. In 2015, mobility is the most important priority, followed by Cloud Services and Digital. There are skills shortages within the market, particular IT professionals proficient in Cloud Services, digital marketing and e-, with many IT Managers having difficulty sourcing IT professionals with advanced soft business skills such as leadership and business acumen. This shortage of properly qualified IT professionals will lead to IT teams recruiting international talent if they are unable to source the required skills locally.

The IT industry is shifting from its traditional technical-based focus to focusing on delivering optimal services to customers. IT departments are also concentrating on operational efficiency and business resiliency, with little time for downtime. Many IT departments are developing flexible technology portfolios that have size without scale, and creating a services portfolio that can quickly adapt to changing business and technology conditions.

IT leaders need to be efficient with their budgets, as well as being a trusted business partner while adding value to the business. They need to  enhance innovation within their teams to help support business growth and competitiveness. IT budgets and where funds are distributed are influenced by innovative digital strategies and new technologies such as mobile, cloud and analytics. CIOs are operating in a challenging environment with increasing business expectations as well as rapid increases in the pace of business and technological change.

IT budgets are primarily being allocated to ‘business as usual’ ventures, however there is an appetite within budgets to fund activities to support business growth and change. Financial priorities continue to be supporting new business needs, driving digital strategy, consolidating infrastructure as well as strengthening risk and security.
