Job Description

  • Provide overall leadership and strategic direction to a sizeable legal practice, with responsibility for its people, performance, culture and growth.
  • Develop and execute the practice's strategic and annual business plan in partnership with senior leadership.
  • Translate broader firm strategy into clear priorities, commercial objectives and growth initiatives for the practice.
  • Lead, mentor and develop senior lawyers and emerging leaders, creating a high-performance and commercially focused culture.
  • Oversee workforce planning, succession planning, talent development, performance management and resource allocation.
  • Drive revenue, profitability and sustainable year-on-year growth.
  • Develop and manage annual budgets, revenue forecasts and performance targets.
  • Monitor and actively manage key commercial metrics including revenue, utilisation, productivity, profitability, WIP, recoverability and matter performance.
  • Identify opportunities to improve pricing, delivery models, productivity and overall practice efficiency.
  • Lead the business development strategy for the practice, with clear accountability for revenue growth and market expansion.
  • Build a sustainable pipeline of new work across existing and prospective clients.
  • Identify and pursue new client, sector and market opportunities.
  • Lead and contribute to significant pitches, tenders, proposals and panel appointments.
  • Develop and leverage a strong external network of clients, industry leaders, intermediaries and referral relationships.

The Successful Applicant

This opportunity requires an established legal leader with the credibility, commercial capability and leadership experience to take ownership of a substantial legal practice.

You will ideally bring:

  • Significant leadership experience within a law firm, legal services business or sophisticated professional services environment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing a sizeable team of lawyers and legal professionals.
  • A strong understanding of the commercial and financial drivers of a legal practice.
  • Experience managing budgets, revenue targets and broader practice financial performance.
  • A demonstrated track record of growing revenue, winning new work and developing existing client relationships.
  • Strong business development capability with the confidence to originate opportunities and convert relationships into sustainable revenue.
  • Established relationships with senior clients and decision-makers within relevant markets.
  • Experience developing and executing practice growth and business plans.
  • Strong people leadership skills with a track record of building, developing and retaining high-performing teams.
  • The ability to influence and engage Partners, senior lawyers, executives and external clients.
  • Strong commercial judgement and the ability to balance client outcomes, people leadership and financial performance.
  • An entrepreneurial and growth-oriented mindset with the ability to identify and capitalise on market opportunities.
  • Legal qualifications and previous experience practising as a lawyer will be highly regarded.
