Home to over 21,000 businesses and 313,000 residents, Blacktown City is the fastest growing local government area in Australia in terms of population growth. With its residents speaking some 38 different languages, it is also a diverse and dynamic part of Sydney.

The future of jobs in Blacktown

2016 saw $1.15 billion worth of development in the Blacktown local government area – second only to the City of Sydney council area. It also has the space to continue to grow and develop; with 3,000 ha of land available for businesses to move into, it has the most land zoned for commercial purposes of any council in NSW.

And with major businesses such as IKEA, Lindt and Costco setting up retailing, manufacturing and distribution centres at the Marsden Park business and retail precinct in recent years, the area’s economy is only likely to grow, attracting more global businesses to the area.

Blacktown recruitment

With its proximity to Parramatta, Sydney’s second CBD, Blacktown is extremely well placed to meet the needs of the booming population and business centre. With a dramatic increase in locals holding tertiary qualifications, the population is also becoming increasingly skilled to take on new roles as the profile of the city’s focal industries changes.

The local council has identified logistics, manufacturing, construction and smaller, ‘niche’ industries characterised by small businesses (like IT) as the major employment clusters in the area. However, with changes to the broader Australian economy and industries, it’s likely that many of the more traditional industries will require fresh skillsets in the coming years.
