Maximising your job search - blog image

The current jobs market is rich in opportunities but poor in available talent. According to the latest Seek Employment Dashboard, national job ad postings have increased by 39.6% in January 2022 compared to the previous year. At the same time, the number of applications per job ad in December 2021 was halved compared to December 2019.

These figures show that the last couple of years has seen a major shift from a competitive jobs landscape to a candidate-driven market. Employers today are finding it increasingly challenging to source qualified candidates to fill openings, and demand is high for skilled professionals across the board.

Consequently, candidates now have more negotiating power than ever before. So how can you make the most of your job search? We’re sharing our key advice to help you capitalise on the opportunities brought about by a candidate-driven market.

Sell your value proposition

With employers monitoring the talent pool closely, now is an ideal opportunity to set yourself apart from your peers. Your value proposition should clearly articulate your unique strengths: what makes you a compelling candidate? What can you bring to the table that others may not be able to? What facets of your experience and expertise will make you the first choice for the jobs you want?

Update your LinkedIn profile and any other relevant profiles to make it clear why employers should invest in you. With a strong value proposition, you’ll put yourself at the top of the pile for relevant jobs, and may even find employers and recruiters actively reaching out to you.

Refine your goals

In a candidate-driven market where opportunities are abundant, understanding your career goals is key to maximising your job search. Reevaluate your objectives to help pinpoint the type of job – and company – that’s right for you at this stage in your career.

For example, is salary or growth and development more important to you at the moment? What benefits are non-negotiable for you to stay motivated in your job? Once you refine your objectives, you can confidently move forward with your job search knowing you’re on the right track.

Know your worth

With organisations doing all they can to secure top talent, you have the luxury of being able to confidently negotiate your market value during the interview process. Research salaries in your industry and be prepared to come to the table with a figure that is appropriately generous for your skill level and expertise. In the current climate, it pays not to sell yourself short.

That said, keep in mind that even if an employer can’t offer you the most competitive salary, they may be able to offer other attractive benefits such as subsidised training or flexible work hours, so make sure to consider the ‘whole package’ when weighing up a job opportunity.
